De Vlaamse textielsector krijgt bijna 9,2 miljoen euro van Europa om de gevolgen van de globalisering in Vlaanderen op te vangen.

Daarvoor heeft het Europees Parlement nu definitief het licht op groen gezet. Het is de eerste keer dat Vlaanderen beroep kan doen op geld uit het Globalisatiefonds. Voor Europarlementsleden Kathleen Van Brempt en Saïd El Khadraoui is de investering een terechte steun aan de Vlaamse textielarbeiders die hun werk verloren. Ze vragen zich wel af waarom de 500 miljoen uit het fonds nog steeds onderbenut blijft.

Exact 9.198.874 euro wordt door Europa uitgekeerd aan de Vlaamse textielsector. Daarvoor heeft het Europees Parlement het licht op groen gezet. Met het geld zullen in totaal 2.199 textielarbeiders uit 46 herstructureringen in Limburg, Oost- en West-Vlaanderen geholpen worden om aan een nieuwe baan te geraken. De bekendste bedrijven waar de gedwongen ontslagen vielen zijn onder meer Bekaert, UCO, Beaulieu en Domo.

Het Globalisatiefonds, dat eind 2006 in het leven is geroepen om de gevolgen van de globalisatie te helpen opvangen, keert voor de eerste keer geld uit in Vlaanderen. Eind 2006 was er sprake van een vergoeding voor de ontslagen werknemers van Volkswagen Vorst, maar VW nam toen zelf de begeleiding op zich. Voor 2009 zal het fonds in totaal iets meer dan 37 miljoen uitkeren. Ook de textielsectoren in Spanje en Portugal krijgen geld van Europa, resp. 3,3 miljoen en 832.800. Voor Dell in Ierland.wordt 14,8 miljoen uitgetrokken.

"De uitkering is een terechte steun aan de ontslagen arbeiders", vinden Kathleen Van Brempt en Saïd El Khadraoui. "We weten dat het niet eenvoudig is om geld uit dit fonds aan te vragen en zijn blij dat de sector dit voor elkaar gekregen heeft. Voor meer dan 2.000 arbeiders kan dit hopelijk een nieuwe toekomst betekenen." Toch zijn beide parlementsleden ook kritisch: "Naar aanleiding van de economische crisis heeft de commissie vorig jaar de regels voor aanvragen in dit fonds versoepeld. Toch blijkt dat, ondanks de significante stijging van het aantal werklozen in Europa, het budget ruim onderbenut blijft. Meer nog, in 2008 is er méér uitgekeerd dan in 2009 (49 miljoen), terwijl ondertussen de regels wel versoepeld zijn. We vragen ons af waar dat aan ligt en zullen de commissie hier over ondervragen."
