Vandaag lichtte commissaris Kroes in de ECON-commissie (economische en monetaire zaken) van het Europees Parlement haar concurrentiebeleid toe. De Commissaris stond onder andere stil bij kartels en de schade die deze bij de consumenten veroorzaken.
Tussen 2005 en 2007 boog de Europese Commissie (EC) zich over 18 kartels in de EU, waarover een beslissing werd genomen. Deze kartels veroorzaakten voor maar liefst 7,6 miljard euro schade, en dit volgens een conservatieve schatting. Heel concreet betekent dit dat wij, u en ik en de bedrijven, voor maar liefst 7,6 miljard euro te veel betaalden voor producten van de firma's die kartels vormden. Dit is totaal onaanvaardbaar. Ik steun de EC dan ook volledig in hun keiharde optreden tegen deze vorm van anti-concurrentieel gedrag. Zo legde de commissie in 2009 voor een totaal van 1,24 miljard euro boete op aan 8 bedrijven die bij 2 kartels betrokken waren. Niet enkel de EC, maar ook de nationale concurrentiewaakhonden moeten hierop zeer nauwlettend toezien. In harde besparingstijden en zoektochten naar miljarden, zou het goed zijn als hier een serieuze tand wordt bijgestoken.
Verder was de commissaris nog maar eens zeer ferm over de Opel saga: geen politieke, wel zuiver economische criteria zullen van tel zijn. We zullen haar zeker aan deze stoere woorden houden.
